Products: Custom Woodworking

I got into woodworking in 2020 while in South Dakota.  When it is gusting 40+ mph winds and freezing cold out, there isn’t a whole lot to do especially when you are limited on the places you can go due to a global pandemic so I think I stumbled on a simple cutting board YouTube video and gathered the supplies needed and went from there.  Since then, I’ve used woodworking as an outlet much like I would with running.  Even though power tools are noisy, I found I can think through a lot with some earphones on and the sander or saw going at full blast.  As an introvert (at least that’s what all the tests I’ve taken in the Air Force have told me), I need a small group of close friends or alone time to recharge and think through things.  Both running and woodworking have offered me that opportunity.
Once we moved to the DC area, I found I had a little more time on my hands than previous assignments and while my family appreciates the quality products I make, we were outgrowing our cabinet space for cutting boards so my wife, who was already a Spouse-ly vendor, recommended I open a shop.  I opened one up in March 2023 and love turning someone else’s vision into a long-lasting custom product they and their families can enjoy.  I can’t recall how I came up with my shop name and logo, but more than likely it involved me on my porch with a cigar and bourbon during a nice evening one day and it just came to me.

Products: Skincare

In 2022, my esthetician mother passed along to me all of her organic, all natural skincare formulations that had been a tightly-held secret for over a decade! As she was getting older and reaching retirement, she wanted her formulations to live on through her daughter. In the spring of 2022, in Southern Pines, NC, outside of Fort Bragg, Blue Water Beauty was born. Blue Water Beauty has provided an opportunity for me as a military spouse to have a mobile career, which I treasure.
Every month I get emails, reviews and DMs from women who love the transformation they see with our products. It fills me with pride to be able to help women truly love their skin. We use the Oil Cleansing Method, which is a technique passed along as a beauty secret for centuries! Every single ingredient in our line is the highest quality so that you can have Radiant, Glowing skin without any of the chemicals or toxins in most beauty products. This business has given me more joy than I knew was possible from work!

Products: Custom & Unique Gifts

In 2020, needing a creative outlet while the world paused, I received my first laser engraver/CNC machine and started creating. Quickly, my passion for the art of laser engraving and design grew through trial and error and after much encouragement from friends and family, I decided to venture outside of my comfort zone and share it with the world through starting a small business, Hangar Fly. At Hangar Fly, I tell stories through custom items, translating ideas and people’s memorable moments into unique pieces of art!  Let my unique vision, passion for story-telling, design and engraving service memorialize your latest accomplishment or most appreciated memory. I love creating custom designs and engraving on a variety of canvases including glass, wood, bone, leather, metal, stone, etc. Whether you are in need of a custom decanter set, an ornate cow skull, or art and furniture made from airplane parts and military surplus, I can create a unique item that you will treasure. At Hangar Fly, each item is individual and should capture its owner’s personality. That’s why I aim to learn your story and turn your imagination into reality.

Both my logo and mascot are inspired by the Women Airforce Service Pilots, WASP, of WWII and modern military aviators.

The logo was drawn to invoke a feeling of nostalgia. Depending on viewpoint, the silhouette of the female aviator could be modern or vintage. Her flight suit, leather jacket, and the illusion of wings and semblance of both a modern helmet and vintage flight goggles invoke a shared sisterhood that transcends time through the shared love of aviation and art of storytelling. The hangar is designed to replicate the WASP hangar at Avenger Field.

The mascot, Hazel the Fly Girl, is inspired by modern military aviators and the WASP mascot, Fifinella. Instead of a gremlin, she is a literal Fly Girl. She is named after WASP Hazel Ying Lee who was the last of 38 WASP’s who died in service to their country.

Products: Children’s Book

I grew up a military child my whole childhood, joined the Army when I was 21 as a Blackhawk helicopter mechanic and crew chief, married my soldier in 2010, and we honorably discharged in late 2013.  We have two boys, two kitties and live in Central Texas, outside of Fort Hood.  I’ve always been a writer, though I had never attempted children’s stories.  When I put my military family heritage together with my writing, The Peppered Sky was born.  This story is inspired by some of my fondest memories of watching my dad perform as a jumpmaster in his Army Airborne training operations.  I have several other stories lined up, waiting for the funding to be published- each written from the perspective of a military child.  My educational background is elementary education and business.  When I was made aware of the incredibly under-represented military child in literature, I knew something had to be done.  My heart is so full finally finding a way to serve the military community again.  My hope is to inspire warmth, joy and understanding for military children.
Book:The Peppered Sky celebrates military family life with Haleigh and Mason as they adventure into a world of airborne drop zones, military aircraft and U.S. paratroopers!  The heart-warming story is educationally extended with included discussion questions, journal prompts, and a craft to promote critical thinking, creative writing and STEM-based learning.  The Peppered Sky is a 32 page, hardcover, first edition book that will be treasured by readers of all ages for years.

Products: Trendy Shirts

Pattern Ops started in 2018 when I had noticed most of my co-workers loved wearing their squadron t-shirts or other casual military-related shirts to show off their jets while out to dinner, etc. I recognized an opportunity to give pilots and other military personnel the chance to show pride in their jobs while also wearing a nicer/dressier shirt, and I had never seen an option available like it.
I initially had only one A-10C prototype made. Once my friends saw the shirt with A-10s, 30mm bullets, and cannons on it, they wanted one too. After that, I made my first batch of shirts of a couple different jet patterns to test the market and sales by selling them one by one through word of mouth. Once this proved successful, I decided to make several more patterns and develop a website. My father who recently passed away from cancer was luckily still around by the time I launched the company to be my first website customer.
Pattern Ops now has most military aircraft shirt patterns available, along with some fun non-military patterns, and we have just launched women’s cuts, men’s long sleeved cuts, and men’s/women’s golf polos. We can customize orders with any pattern customers may want on their shirts, including squadron emblems, companies, logos, groups, clubs, etc. My goal is to establish the company as the go-to for custom button-ups. I’m trying to take the idea to golf courses, wineries, yacht clubs, you name it. Ultimately, I want to reach enough success to start giving more back to nonprofits ― and even open up a charitable foundation named after my dad, Ed. From here, I want to use my success and everything I’ve learned to help other military people start companies. I’ve been very blessed with my life and my initial success with Pattern Ops. As the company grows, my main goal and plan is to use that growth to help people through those blessings.

Services: Full-Service Creative Agency

Founded in 2017, Sawgrass Marketing is a full-service creative agency rooted in southern hospitality and influenced by international culture and design.

Their goal is to immerse luxury brands clientele in a feeling of pristine, natural beauty.

For Founder, Courtney Ross, that feeling is found along the Forgotten Coast and reignited when she moved to coastal North Carolina. As an ode to her Southern heritage, Sawgrass Marketing was named after the vast marshlands that cover the southeastern United States – and host a diverse ecosystem of wildlife and natural beauty.

As the spouse of a USMC pilot, Courtney has seen first hand how difficult it can be for military spouses to find flexible employment opportunities, especially for highly educated, ambitious spouses. To help ambitious men and women kickstart their business, Sawgrass Marketing is committed to providing three military spouse owned start ups with complimentary branding every year.

The Sawgrass team now spans four states along the southeastern coast, two countries, and works with clients worldwide. Courtney and her family are currently stationed in Japan.

Products: Handmade Jewelry

The beach is where I am most comfortable and feel most at home. Having grown up in the beach cities of Southern California, it’s obvious where my love of the ocean began. It is where I go for peace, rejuvenation, and inspiration.

From SoCal, I moved to The Islands and graduated from the University of Hawaii. I met and married my husband who is Active Duty Coast Guard. I have been a Coast Guard wife for 17 years and love our military life experiences and adventures.

I found my passion of jewelry design while we were stationed in Humboldt County, Northern California. It began with a few basic jewelry making courses.  I further studied metalsmith for jewelry design at College of the Redwoods.

Each piece is handmade and completely inspired by the ocean and elements of nature, where the balance between mental, physical, and spiritual well-being come together.

Products: Aviation, Home, and Kids Gifts

Lil Posh Shop was created out of my love for design, aviation, all the little people in my life, and wanting to help families celebrate all those precious, heart pounding special moments. With our family rooted with a love for aviation, a husband as a fighter pilot, and being a new mom, I was in search of unique aviation goods for my own son. Finding quality products that were also nicely designed was difficult. Finding fighter jet goods specifically was even harder.

With my knowledge and background in merchandising management and product development, this label premiering fighter jet baby/toddler products was born.

My background is in higher education. I have a Masters in Merchandising Management and taught at a Design School/University for ten years. I also worked at a children’s wear manufacturer specializing in quality cotton garments. I am a recently retired Milspouse; my husband flew in the Air Force for over 24 years. I am a mother of two amazing boys Nicky & Koa. Military families are near and dear to my heart, which is why our product designs have been tailored to the military aviation communities.
