How to best use the notepad…

Start of the week activities on Sunday:

*Name* – Every kid likes to have ownership of their work! Have them write their name.

*I need* – This is an “I need” statement that can be used to improve understanding of mental state and emotional needs. If your child has a hard time coming up with what they need prompt them with some ideas… “Do you need an extra phone call with your parent? Do you need a play date with a friend? Do you need some extra time in the morning to get ready? Do you need extra hugs and cuddles?”

*Habit Tracker* – This can be used as a chore list, enforcing good habits, or deterring unpleasant habits. Write the days of the week at the top or a number count to mark off for so many times in the week. Write whatever reward you agree upon with your child.

*___ days until______!* – This can be a countdown to anything your child is excited about! Maybe it is next weekend, a big event, the next time they see a friend, etc.

*My Goals – This week and Next week* – Either have them draw a picture or write in sentence format what their primary goal is this week for them to focus on. Is it to go to bed on time? Finish all their chores? Learn a new skill or task? Be kind and courteous? What do they have their eye for their future goal for the following week? This teaches your child to focus on the here and now but to have an eye on the future at the same time.

End of the week activities on Saturday or Sunday:

*The best part of this week/The part I wish was better* – Have them draw a picture and explain it to you or write it down in sentence format.

*My mood* – This can either be circled, checked, or colored in! Ask the child while they picked the emotion they did. If they need more room to draw the correct face or draw a picture, use the back of the paper!

*My Goals – This week and Next week* – Did they accomplish their goal this week? Has their goal for next week change from earlier in the week? Discuss the outcomes and why.

Use their documented week during a family meeting, to help them engage with their long distanced loved one, or simply keep it to show personal growth and accountability.
