Mottainai Creations

Joined Spouse-ly: 8 months ago

Mottainai Creations originated in 2017 in Okinawa, Japan with the mission to re-purpose and recycle found kimonos and Japanese textiles into women’s accessories and home decor. Each one unique in the color, texture, and story that it holds. Mottainai (pronounced mote-tie-nigh), is a term used in Japan for “don’t waste” which embodies the ethos; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Respect.

Owner and artist, Jennifer Kemp is a Navy wife of 22 years, mother of three handsome boys, and a part time creator currently residing in San Diego. Within the first year of being on Okinawa, she stepped foot in a recycle center and bought her first kimono. Although the discarded kimonos appeared undesirable, she had an instant appreciation for the culture through these beautiful textiles and found inspiration and giving them a new life.

The authentic kimono fabric and material is locally sourced in Japan. Pinholes and/or small stains are seen, and embraced by the artist as character, and reflective of the soul of the vintage goods utilized.
