Who Is Pebble and Palm?

An Army spouse who loves to create using Shibori – a Japanese dyeing technique which uses objects to create a resist on fabric to produce a pattern.  I then use those dyed fabrics to make unique Gifts and Home Goods.

What is Shibori?

Shibori originated in China and was adopted by the Japanese in the 8th century. It is a fabric dyeing technique historically done with natural indigo and cotton – common items found in that time.  There are six major types of Shibori – Itajime, Arashi, Kanoko, Miura, Nui and Kumo – any of which can be used to prepare a natural fiber fabric prior to being submerged in the dye bath.  After dyeing, the items used to prepare the resist are removed to unveil the pattern left on the fabric.

Meet the Maker

Jessica Schwan

A New Jersey native, Jessica spent over 15 years in the wholesale and manufacturing sectors of the fashion and gift industries in both NYC and San Francisco. While living and working in SF, she met her husband, an active-duty Army officer, in the San Francisco Airport on one of her flights back to the East Coast. After a whirlwind romance, they married, and the Army moved them to Oahu where she learned Shibori at the Honolulu Museum of Art. The Japanese dyeing process has become her passion – learning more through trips to Japan, books and other Shibori artists.
